What does a District Judge do?
District Court is the first level of judicial authority in Pennsylvania and is the court where most people experience the judicial system for the first time.
District Judges preside over all summary offenses, in both traffic and criminal matters. District Judges also handle all preliminary hearings for misdemeanor, felony and homicide cases. They review and authorize arrest warrants and search warrants, arraign defendants, and set bail. They handle all civil cases involving disputes up to $12,000, landlord-tenant matters, and truancy cases.
They serve as a vital connection to their communities; they are often involved in community events and can perform marriages.
"Representing individuals who wouldn’t otherwise have a voice in the courtroom has taught me how to truly listen to others’ stories and to advocate for their needs.” Tim Barton
